The 2015 Lincoln Navigator Fools You With Modern Architecture

Kinja'd!!!

It appears the 2015 Lincoln Navigator has broken through the various automotive press quarantines, and now it is open season for the sarcastic journalist folk and anyone with an asshole opinion to shit all over LiMoCo's Escalade-wannabe. Great, let's begin.

Despite the opening above, I'm really the last person on earth to get serious about ridiculing a designer's or design team's work. As much as some people want to burn Chris Bangle at the stake for ruining an entire generation of BMWs, I'm not sure if I want to go down that road with arguably the most archaic design to ever grace any given Ford/Lincoln dealership since the decidedly pre-Industrial Revolution Ford Super Duty.

Kinja'd!!!

In most ways, the 2015 Lincoln Navigator is no different. It appears this is a heavy effort in the facelift department, as expected, but you immediately recognize architectural cues that bring up red flags everywhere. Just for starters, look at the daylight opening on the side profile of the vehicle and start whispering to yourself, "Oh shit ... not again."

Kinja'd!!!

Same story on the inside. A current-gen F150 steering wheel is recycled with a slapped-on Lincoln logo, as if to completely confuse me about exactly what vehicle I'm driving, and despite claims of brand-spanking-new interior appointments and materials, it's obvious that the same underlying architecture and layout was– again –recycled. Oh Lincoln.

Kinja'd!!!

All of this, however, is completely forgivable to your author. The design team here has successfully retained the EXACT SAME VEHICLE from the last generation or two of Navigators and managed to make it seem somewhat fresh. The front and back façades look handsome and svelte – and if not that, a huge improvement over the chromed-out mouth guard that adorns the existing model. Fine by me, despite the rest of the vehicle looking alarmingly familiar.

Kinja'd!!!

Photos of this new SUV from HQ make me laugh, though. The talent they hired to make this new(ish) Lincoln look its best did it right – put it in front of some Seattle-Tacoma contemporist mansion with frosted glass garage doors and let the two shapes play off each other. After all, a box reflects a box, right?

Kinja'd!!!

These projections of "lifestyle" in the form of marketing photography are extremely powerful, but you'll also remember that nearly any other Range Rover or Hyundai Santa Fe would work just as perfectly in the same setting. LiMoCo wants to sell "progressive luxury" and a "confident, forward-thinking demeanor" despite being a completely expected and openly ridiculed piece of machinery that we already know way too well.

I dig the style, I think there's a lot to like, but let's not sell it as something it's not. My money is betting against some miraculous Frank Lloyd Wright resurgence in automotive prowess for this new Lincoln, and nearly every other person that graces this planet with their presence would place the same bet. In other news, water is wet and Charles and Ray Eames once designed a chair.

I love it. Contemporary architecture seems to fit a lot of new vehicles so well. Unless you're selling a '98 Bentley Azure in DuPont Registry, where you'll need a pretty big Baroque-style house in the Hamptons for a backdrop.

Hopefully it is not a mid-cycle refresh, but more a bridge-the-gap refresh. Bridge the gap till a truly new model comes out.

Having said that, I do like the looks both inside and out. Perhaps a good deal can be had in the not too distant future. Either way, I'd prefer one of these over an Escalade. I like that the Navigator gets away with a more understated look, on top of that it looks grown up and sophisticated. Especially next to that ugly mug they've plastered on the Escalade.

At least they gave it a new(er) engine. Can I get amen for giving that a green light?

Frankly, I think that's the bigger story, the EcoBoost. Granted, even that is lipstick on a slightly prettier looking pig.

You make some great points especially on appointments that aren't tied to hardpoints like the steering wheel.

Kinja'd!!!0

The EcoBoost option is glorious, no problem there.

After letting it sit and rest on these eyes for a week or so, I think the main gripes go toward the daylight opening on the side profile and the steering wheel. Anyone who is thirteen years old and up will recognize it as their uncle's aging beater Navigator. If one can get past that (including me, I suppose), this refresh deserves to be respected. Honestly.

Opinions on individual cars aside, you have to admire Cadillac for actually coming out with a legitimately all-new Escalade. This is just a front-rear facelift and an additional engine option on a vehicle that was old-fashioned to begin with. I have to say I agree with the above- given the money, I'd take a Benz ML or GL, Land Rover LR4, X5, Q7, or pretty much anything else. It's not that there's anything particularly wrong the the Gator, but all the foreign competitors are designed from the start as world class luxury SUVs which have the capability of 4x4s but drive like luxury cars. I've been in the old-new Navigator several times-it drives like a plushed-up version of the pickup truck on which it's based.

Well you are probably correct in the fact that the chassis and powertrain options have varied slightly throughout the existence of the Expedition/Navigator platform, the '03-'06 vehicle was not like this Nav. '07 brought the "new" design which was a completely different body and interior along with getting rid of the air bags at all four corners. Your 11 year claim of the same greenhouse is wrong, I'll give you 8 years on the current platform but that is about it. Out of the now 4 generations of Navigators, gen 3 and 4 vary the least and have had the longest run so far. I still believe gen 2 was the best and if I had the desire to fund running a giant SUV I very well would probably chose to buy an '06 Nav. . . Gimme that floaty air suspension!

Most people seeing the Escalade would hope to see similar all new machinery from Lincoln. Sadly, the two companies are in different places. Lincoln needs to dump the lion's share of its money into creating world class passenger cars FIRST. They can't afford to invest in an entirely new Navi, a model that gets outsold by the MKS. The MKS people! The Navi sold under 9000 units last year. It's not where Lincoln's focus should be and I'm glad they know that. It means someone at the helm is paying attention. Hell, the Escalade sold only ~12,000 units in the same period, so what was GM thinking? It's all well and good that they have an all new one, but it's a high cost, low volume segment and they probably lose money on it. Maybe they can afford to lose some money for the cache of an all new loss leader but Lincoln can't. If they had debuted some glitzy new Navigator at the autoshow I would have shaken my head and mourned the death of Lincoln. As it is I have hope for the future. I have no doubt a new Navigator will one day appear. But it is not this day.

The primary customers for Navigators these days will love it.

And by "primary customers," I'm referring to limousine companies. With the discontinuation of the Town Car, pretty much all the major livery services in Los Angeles have moved to large black SUVs. Lots of Escalades, Yukons, Navigators and Expeditions. Ironically, very few of the new MKT-based Town Cars.

I'm a huge fan of Lincoln and I hope they have a successful turnaround like Cadillac did in the past decade. The MKZ is a nice car and a huge step in the right direction, but this is just more of the same old stuff that got them in trouble in the first place. Why pay a premium for this when you can have a Ford F-150 crew cab or Expedition with nearly all of the same options for less money?

Without a serious rethinking of product, Lincoln will never find success with the average luxury buyer. Instead, Lincoln Motor Company will stay confined to virtually the same place they've been for the last ten or fifteen years; the LiMo Company. And without a big rear-drive sedan, they're losing that market, too.

The new navigator is the one that everyone thought they should have done on the last one. It is the same truck, but with beautiful incorporation of the corporate design and high quality interior materials. The only reason that people are bitching about the interior is because it looks like the old one, but it is all new! Just because the shapes are similar, doesn't make it a cheap update. An all new one is coming in a few years, and the class level of this one gives me hope for that one

A heavy facelift Navigator, the MKZ which was offered for testers on Ferrari-spec tires, the Escape-based MKC crossover and...

I've never understood why the Lincoln brand isn't just "closed for renovation" until they get their products in order. The MKZ and MKC are a good start, why not just ditch the rest of the lineup while something new, competitive is being cooked up? The brand's got so much potential but churning out stuff like this makes Ford's claims about the brand's future highly dubious and harms their reputation. This car has been around since 2003, and hasn't received a significant update since 2006. That's eight years since the last facelift.

I don't care for the Dodge Durango tail lights. They're OK on a Durango, but look wrong and derivitive on the Navigator. Overall, the design is tepid and lazy and reeks of badge engineering one a very small budget. In a word: lazy.

I've never understood why the Lincoln brand isn't just "closed for renovation"

AAAAHHHHH! This little snippet in your reply rang so true to me I literally screamed out loud. Thank you.

You say Seattle-Tacoma architecture. Have you been to Tacompton? The place is a dump. Maybe more Seattle-Redmond/Bellevue architecture

Despite it somewhat working on the rear for me, isn't it the most depressing thing about the vehicle when you think about it? Lincoln had to completely and shamelessly insert a design feature that just smacks of plagiarism? Honestly, I want to defend it, but it's difficult to keep up.

I absolutly hate the Expedition it's the same truck they sold in o7 it even still used the old touchscreen. This is better but still awful. Aslo no one needs a vehical that size. 10/1 you'll see them with one person, no cargo, and not pulling a huge trailer.

I think we'll all hold a fair final judgement until some Jalopnik reader in a couple years stumbles into one on the way to the airport. "Oh, damn, I think I remember someone bitching about this on Oppo."

It's an SUV and a "Luxury" one at that. Look at the Escalade that it is competing against. The column shifter just looks out of place. Maybe if it where chromed (not really).

Kinja'd!!!

On the other hand, a solution for the luxury SUV might be to copy Jaguars knob shifter. It could be done in brushed aluminum with leather accents or whatever fancy material to give you that luxury feel. That way you still get plenty of room for your ever growing cup holders.

I actually wouldn't even discard using some sort of paddle system to switch gear (even though it is an automatic). That way you clear the column/dash and the center console.

I'll append: "Okay, this is a nice detail. But it could have been 600% better. C'mon."

I still maintain that the real feat here is, again, the designers managed to sooooomewhat effectively freshen-up a vehicle that is 13 years old. THIRTEEN years old. That nearly numbs my brain.

The only reason caddi got a whole new body is because the shit mobiles its based on where replaced. IF ford re-designed the Expedition on which the NAV is based, it to would be all new and not a facelift as well. Cadi did nothing revolutionary with the new escalade besides continue to sell an over priced tahoe for idiots that desire a badge and the feeling like they too are a rapper.

I really like the Cadillac shifter, but my preferences tend to be skewed. I think the best alternative to the traditional column shifter is Mercedes' column shifter
